Merano is in the southern part of the Alps, otherwise known as the Dolomites - the Italian Alps. Before WWI, the area was part of Germany, so most residents speak both Italian and German. Every year they have one of the largest Christmas markets in Italy. We went and enjoyed snacking on German food, drinking hot cocoa and gluwine (hot mulled wine), and listening to street performers play a mix of Christmas music and hymns. The market in an Alpine backdrop.
Merano shows its German roots at lunchtime.
An entire log set on fire!
Note to Aaron and Dave: look familiar?
